Disaster Management and Emergency Response
- Disaster Management and Emergency Response
In recent years, Somalia and Kenya have faced a series of climate-induced disasters, notably severe droughts and devastating floods, which have profoundly impacted their populations and economies. In the arid lands of the Horn of Africa, climate change is reshaping the lives of pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities. Prolonged droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and shifting weather patterns are threatening traditional livelihoods, pushing vulnerable families to the brink.
The recurrent nature of these climate-related disasters underscores the urgent need for sustained international support and investment in resilience-building measures to mitigate the impact of future calamities in the Horn of Africa. Agro-pastoral and pastoral communities in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia are particularly vulnerable, as climatic shocks continue to fuel resource conflicts and economic instability.
The lack of capacity to deal with the impact of climate change leaves these communities trapped in a cycle of poverty and vulnerability. Resource-based conflicts further compound the crisis, exacerbating food insecurity, displacement, and instability.
CoDHNet’s Commitment to Resilience and Emergency Response
At CoDHNet, we believe in proactive solutions. By working hand in hand with communities, we foster sustainable practices that enhance resilience and secure livelihoods. Through knowledge-sharing, innovation, and local partnerships, we empower families to adapt to environmental challenges and build a future where they can thrive despite climate shocks.
Through our Environment and Natural Resource Management Program, we strengthen the capacity of local communities to manage natural resources sustainably. Our interventions focus on:
- Improving food production techniques through agricultural demonstrations, dryland farming, and drought-resistant crops.
- Enhancing water conservation efforts and promoting climate-smart agricultural solutions.
- Encouraging alternative livelihoods to reduce reliance on climate-sensitive sectors.
